A firewall protects your computer from being hacked into via your internet connection.
There are 2 types of firewall: software and hardware.
I do not recommend using software firewalls.
Software firewalls always hog system resources, you might suddenly find yourself unable to connect to the internet, and software firewalls can be comprised easily by experienced attackers.
A hardware firewall is much more secure and will not slow down your computer. All high speed internet users should use a NAT router (hardware firewall).
You can buy a good router for about $60. I strongly recommend Linksys routers. I've seen and heard of problems with other brands. I always use Linksys and never have problems.
Browse Linksys routers here. You can buy Linksys products at almost any computer store.
If you're going to use wireless, you should get a wireless-N router because it will provide better speeds than wireless-G.
If you're going to use a software firewall, you can use the firewalls built in to XP and Vista. Those native firewalls work fairly good- as far as software firewalls are concerned.
