Browsers Guide

Your choice of internet browser affects your computer's security and performance.

The fastest and most secure web browser is Firefox, and it's free.

I strongly recommend that you use Firefox, it's the best there is in all aspects of web browsing. There are a multitude of free addons for Firefox, so you can get more out of your web experience regardless of what you want to do with your browser. Information and download link down the page.

Regarding choice of web browser, some browsers are slower than others, and some are less secure. I advise NOT using Internet Explorer, it's garbage, but millions of people use IE just because it comes with their computer and they believe it's good.

Statistics at Scanit reveal what a piece of crap Internet Explorer has been:

In 2004, Internet Explorer had one or more remote code execution vulnerabilities with no fix available for 98% of the year, Opera 17%, and Mozilla 15%.

In 2005, IE was unsafe for 70% of the year, Mozilla only 4%.

In 2006, IE had unpatched critical vulnerabilities for 77% of the year, Mozilla only 2%.

Nothing has changed, December 17, 2008 Washington Post article, IE still unsafe.

Using Internet Explorer is a bad idea in my opinion, regardless of what version you use.

More harmful BHOs and Active X controls are written to exploit IE than any other browser, and IE gets infected easier than any other browser.

Most of the infected computers I fix had Internet Explorer as the only or primary web browser. It doesn't matter if you're using IE6, IE7, or IE8, Internet Explorer is garbage and you will have issues if you use it.

If you like having sporadic troubles with your internet, spending hours or days cleaning infections, changing all your passwords, or you like to practice recovering your files and re-installing Windows, then IE is the browser for you. Otherwise, try to avoid using Internet Explorer.

There's a great FAQ page at Scanit's site if you want to learn more about browsers and their security, click here to go there.

Opera is a good browser, and better than IE, but not as good as Firefox.

Netscape was another decent browser, and at one time was the most popular browser. It was discontinued Feb. 1, 2008. AOL took over and still owns Netscape. Netscape users were advised to upgrade to an AOL browser.

Anything AOL is one of the worst things you can install on your computer. Anyone who has had to work on a computer with AOL installed knows what a pain AOL can be.

There's an AOL Remover on the Tools page here.  AOL doesn't completely uninstall itself no matter how hard you try to uninstall it, the AOL Remover gets the job done.

SWF- Flash

More and more web pages use Flash for multimedia presentation and require The Adobe Flash Player. Just about everyone has the Flash Player installed and it's becoming an integral part of the web. Sometimes security vulnerabilities are discovered, so it is important that you update your Flash Player if you get a notification that an update is available.

Firefox

In addition to Firefox's superior security, there are a multitude of free add-ons and extensions for Firefox, making Firefox the most customizable browser, as well as the fastest and most secure.

As a web designer/developer, I've been cross testing sites in various browsers for years.

I've tried all the popular browsers, and I prefer Firefox over all others because of it's speed and security, and because of the many available free addons that make Firefox far more functional than IE.
